Residents celebrate their new bowling green

Despite the challenges 2020 has thrown at all of use: the autumn and winter weather, COVID-19 lockdowns and subsequent supply issues, we are so very proud to announce that Catalina now has a new central hub. Construction of our new competition-sized bowling green was completed recently and is now available for our residents to enjoy for a friendly competition or a bit of fun.

There were smiles and banter all round as our residents encouraged each other to have a go when we celebrated the launch with them. The mix of bowling skills was from one end of the spectrum to the other from bowling pros with all the right gear to absolute beginners who’d never held a lawn bowls ball…and those who were there for the social interaction and preferred to watch. With 8 rinks, the bowling green is championship-sized and it was spectacular to see it all come together.

Everyone savoured the local beverages and the smell of wood-fired pizzas wafting through the community centre landing was unmistakable. Skilful pizza-maker, Rich Low from The Fired Up Pizza Co. definitely kept the hungry bellies at bay with his excellent range of pizza toppings. There were many mouthwatering “oohs” and “mmms” as each one was carefully transferred from the mobile oven to their plates.

As the music dimmed, Catalina management spoke of the journey taken to construct the bowling green over the last few months. Having seen it all come together, our residents were now delighted to be learning some bowling tricks and tips from experienced bowler Ian ‘Red’ Wall and his wife Ruth from nearby Gwandalan Bowling Club. Socks and bare feet were a popular choice for those playing on the green whilst others chose to soak up the sunshine from the new outdoor seating overlooking the green.
